If you’re looking for a destination that feels untouched, remote, and truly wild, southern Venezuela is one of those places.
This journey takes you through Gran Sabana, one of the most unique landscapes in South America, filled with ancient rock formations known as tepuis, endless savannas, rivers, and waterfalls.

What makes this region so special?
Southern Venezuela is part of Canaima National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dramatic table-top mountains and some of the oldest geological formations on Earth. And of course, you cannot miss to visit views to Orinoco River when you visit Ciudad Bolívar and waterfalls in the middle of the city when visiting Ciudad Guayana.
This is not your typical tourist destination, it’s remote, raw, and absolutely breathtaking.
Highlights of the journey
One of the most iconic experiences here is trekking to Mount Roraima (main pic), a massive flat-top mountain located at the intersection of Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana.

The trek usually takes several days and requires a guide, but once you reach the top, the landscape feels almost like another planet.
Another must-see is Angel Falls, the tallest waterfall in the world, dropping nearly 1,000 meters from the Auyán-tepui.

Getting there is part of the adventure — typically involving a small plane flight into Canaima and a river journey by traditional wooden canoe.
Planning your trip
Unlike many destinations, this region often requires planning ahead:
- Most travelers visit with guided tours
- Access to Angel Falls is seasonal (best during rainy months)
- Trekking Roraima requires permits and local guides. You must book a tour, the one I took included 3 meals, guides, and even tents to sleep.
- Transportation may include small planes, 4×4 vehicles, and river boats. All that is easier and better with a tour. The most popular one is Waku Lodge.
If you’re researching how to visit Venezuela safely and responsibly, especially as an international traveler, I recommend checking detailed guides and travel tips on a site I collaborate with my brother: XploreVenezuela
Is it worth it?
Absolutely!! I mean… look at my face in the photo below 🙂 lol

Southern Venezuela is not just a destination, it’s an experience. From the silence of the savanna to the power of Angel Falls, it’s one of those places that stays with you long after the trip ends.
If you enjoy adventure travel, nature, hiking, and unique destinations, this is a place you should definitely add to your list.
